Real or not? How to recognise a diamond

The surest way to recognise a real diamond is a certificate from an independent laboratory. Home tests such as the fog test or the light test give clues but do not replace a gemmological examination. Only documented origin gives final certainty.

The question of authenticity accompanies every diamond. Many quick tests circulate on the internet, and some provide useful clues. But none replaces a verdict. Whoever wants certainty must know what a home test can do and where it ends.

How to recognise a real diamond

These tests can be carried out without instruments. They give clues, not a final result:

  • Fog test: breathe on the stone. A real diamond conducts heat well; the fog disappears almost immediately. Fakes stay fogged longer.
  • Refraction: a diamond refracts light strongly and looks alive. Glass or zirconia scatter more dully and look flatter.
  • Loupe: tiny, natural inclusions tend to speak for a real stone. Perfectly flawless, very cheap stones are suspicious.
  • Print test: through a loose, real diamond, text beneath it can hardly be read clearly because of the strong refraction.

Important about home tests

  • They provide clues, not a verdict.
  • Modern imitations such as moissanite pass some tests.
  • With set or enclosed stones many tests cannot be applied.

The loupe shows inclusions; the verdict on authenticity is made by a laboratory.

Why a certificate says more than any home test

A gemmological laboratory tests with instruments that are not available at home: thermal conductivity, refractive index, spectral analysis. The result is documented in a certificate that records cut, colour, clarity and weight. This document is the most reliable mark of authenticity because it makes the examination traceable.

Every Diamonds in Glass piece is delivered with its own certificate and a number. Via this number the authenticity can be verified online at any time, without removing the stone from the glass.

Frequently asked questions

Answered briefly

  • Most reliably via a certificate from an independent gemmological laboratory. Home tests such as the fog test or checking the refraction give clues but do not provide a certain verdict.

  • Partly. Fog test, refraction and loupe give first clues. Modern imitations such as moissanite can pass individual tests, however, so no home test replaces a gemmological examination.

  • A certificate documents the essential properties of the stone, usually cut, colour, clarity and weight, as well as a unique number by which the document can be assigned to the stone.

  • Via the certificate number that comes with every piece. You can enter it online and have the authenticity confirmed, without removing the diamond from the glass.
