Push present: a gift for the birth that stays

The birth of a child is a day that never passes. A push present gives it a form that can be worn.

A push present is a gift to the mother on the birth of a child. It usually comes from the partner, as thanks for pregnancy and birth and as recognition of what she has achieved.

The term comes from American English, where the custom has been widespread for years. It has since arrived in Germany and Austria too, often under the simpler name of a gift for the birth.

There is no fixed time. Some give the gift in the first days after the birth, others on coming home with the child. Many wait for a quiet moment in the first weeks, when the first excitement has passed and the gift really lands.

Jewellery is worn and thus stays visible, every day. It can be tied to a date, and it can be passed on. A piece for the birth may one day belong to the child whose arrival it marks.

With a baby in your arms, what is practical changes. Small hands reach for everything that shines and dangles. That does not speak against jewellery, but for a deliberate choice:

• A ring hardly gets in the way when holding and changing the baby if it sits smoothly.
• Small studs are more practical in the first year than drop earrings.
