Finding your ring size: three ways to the right size

A ring that fits goes unnoticed. One that pinches or slips stays in the drawer. The size is therefore the first decision, before metal, stone and glass colour.

In Germany and Austria the ring size is given as the inner circumference in millimetres. A ring of size 54 has an inner circumference of 54 millimetres. The inner diameter is also common; for size 54 that is about 17.2 millimetres.

Both measures are firmly linked: circumference divided by 3.14 gives the diameter, diameter times 3.14 the circumference. Whoever knows one knows both.

• 1.Choose a ring that sits comfortably on the desired finger, ideally with a narrow band.
• 2.Place it on a ruler and measure the inner diameter from inner edge to inner edge.
• 3.Multiply the value by 3.14. The result is your ring size in the European measure.

An example: 17.2 millimetres of inner diameter times 3.14 gives 54 millimetres of circumference, so size 54.

• 1.Cut a strip of paper about one centimetre wide.
• 2.Wrap it around the widest part of the finger, snug, without constricting.
• 3.Mark the point where the paper overlaps and measure the length up to the mark.
• 4.The length in millimetres is your ring size.

Measure twice, ideally on two different days. Paper is more reliable than a thread because it hardly stretches.

• Fingers swell in warmth and over the course of the day. Ideally measure in the evening at room temperature.
• The ring must fit over the knuckle. If the knuckle is clearly wider than the base of the finger, the knuckle counts.
• Both hands are rarely the same. The hand you write with is often slightly stronger.
• Wide bands sit tighter than narrow ones. With a wide ring, half a size to a full size more can be more comfortable.
• If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one.
